Hilsa is a sub-division of Nalanda distt.It is situated at 40 KM south-east from Patna by road or railway via Daniyamwa,32 KM north-west from Bihar Sharif via Tharthari & 18 KM from Chandi by road via Kebai-Saidbarhi.
The city was known as Haldharpur, and has it's presence in the ancient scriptures.
It is said that, while visiting to the capital of Magadh- The Rajagrih, intending to kill the Jarasandh, the duo- Lord Krishna & Lord Balaram stayed here to rejuvenate. The 'Kachhi-talab' is said to be dug by Balaram, when the duo felt thirsty, and Krishna wished to quench his thirst, however the encroachment has almost gulped this ancient blessing from the divinity.
Hilsa is also famous for higher secondary education due to a prestigious establishment known as Ram Babu High School, which is recognized by the state government.
